Harmonising Age Pathology Parameters in Kids (HAPPI Kids)

The Harmonising Age Pathology Parameters in Kids (HAPPI Kids) study commenced in 2015 out of The Royal Children’s Hospital in Victoria, Australia. The study prospectively collects pediatric blood samples to establish age-specific pediatric reference intervals for hematology, immunology, and biochemistry analytes commonly used in clinical practice.

Health information and blood samples are collected from healthy premature neonates, term neonates, as well as children and adolescents from 0-18 years of age, undergoing minor day surgical procedures from 5 different study sites.

Samples from 616 healthy children and adolescents were analyzed to establish continuous reference intervals for 30 biochemical analytes across 5 different analyzer types. Additionally, continuous reference interval curves as well as discrete reference limits for the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles are reported as functions of age and sex for all analytes and across all instruments examined. More recently in 2020, the HAPPI Kids team also established continuous pediatric reference intervals for cystatin C.
